In Vietnam, Tet, also known as the Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional festival of the year. It marks the arrival of spring and is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, and paying respects to elders. Tet is celebrated over a period of seven days, with each day having its own significance and customs.

The first day of Tet is known as “Tet Nguyen Dan” and is considered the most important day of the festival. It is a time for families to gather together, offer prayers to their ancestors, and visit the graves of loved ones. Traditionally, families would clean their homes and prepare special foods to offer to their ancestors. It is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to their homes during Tet to bless their descendants with prosperity and good fortune.

On the second day of Tet, people visit the homes of friends and relatives to exchange good wishes and gifts. This is known as “Xong Dat” and is a time for spreading happiness and good fortune. People also visit temples to pray for health, wealth, and happiness in the coming year.

The third day of Tet is known as “Giao Thua” or New Year’s Eve. This is a time for bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new year with hope and optimism. Families gather together to enjoy a festive meal, watch fireworks, and participate in traditional rituals to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.

Throughout the week of Tet, there are also many traditional customs and activities that take place. These include dragon dances, firecrackers, traditional games, and the giving of lucky money in red envelopes. People also decorate their homes with flowers, fruit trees, and other symbolic items to bring prosperity and good luck.

Tet is a time of joy, renewal, and reflection for the Vietnamese people. It is a time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future with hope and optimism. As the most important festival of the year, Tet is a time for families to come together, strengthen bonds, and create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.
